Mountain Expeditions in Nepal

Trekking in Nepal is an all season activity. It’s possible at any time of the year depending on the region. Taking advantage of the best weather, the most popular seasons are spring (February-May) and autumn (September-November). Even during the monsoon (June-August), you can trek in the rain shadow areas of Mustang, Upper Manang and Dolpo in the north.

Everest Region

The area around Mount Everest , home of the Sherpa people and the mysterious Yeti, is commonly called the Solu Khumbu region. This trek comprises not only Everest Base Camp, but also familiar place names like Namche Bazaar, Lukla and Tyangboche Monastery. In the lap of looming Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, and Mount Ama Dablam, the area is not only famous for trekking and expedition, but also for enjoying and learning about Sherpa culture.

The Everest Region is the second most popular destination for trekkers in Nepal. Its popularity has grown since the first expedition to the Nepalese side of Everest in the 1950s. The complete trek starts from Jiri. However, flying to Lukla is the best option for those with limited time and we have devised a two week trek to Everest Base Camp which runs directly to and from Lukla. The trek follows the Dudh Kosi valley with an ascent up to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. From Namche, we traverse along a high trail from where we have our first good view of Everest. We then head towards Thyangboche Monastery located on top of a mountain ridge. From there, we descend to the Imja Khola and continue to the villages of Pangboche and Pheriche. As we approach the Khumbu Glacier, the trek takes us first to Lobuche and then to Gorak Shep. From Gorak Shep, we climb up to Kala Pattar for an even more spectacular view of the surrounding mountains, including Everest's southwest face. We then visit Everest Base Camp at the foot of the Khumbu ice fall before making our way back down to Lukla.

As the scheduled flights to Lukla depend on weather conditions, a helicopter service and chartered flights are also available on request. The Everest Trek is one of the most thrilling adventures for excitement-seekers. However, there are several other interesting trekking routes within the Solu Khumbu Region like Shyangboche, Thami, Gokyo and the Chhukung Valley.

Annapurna Region

The diverse terrain and variety of cultures of the region north of Pokhara, with each day's walk a different experience, have made the Annapurna region the most popular destination in the country. Four favorite treks, each with minimum of about one week and maximum of three weeks, to the Kali Gandaki basin include the Manang region, Annapurna range, Jomsom and the Annapurna Sanctuary. Alpine meadows, moraines, glaciers and breathtaking views of the Annapurnas abound. The three hundred kilometer Annapurna Circuit, combining the first two areas by crossing the high altitude pass, Thorang-La (5360 meters) from Manang, takes up to three weeks to complete.

Trekking in this region is magnificent, sometimes covering two different river valleys. The beautiful mountain scenery and fascinating village life will keep you enthralled, day after day. A moderate to challenging trek which sometimes requires climbing up and down steep mountain paths can be done anytime of the year except during the monsoon and winter. Taking a flight from Jomsom to Pokhara is possible to shorten the trek’s duration.

Langtang Region

Trekking in the spectacular Langtang region, located only 19 miles north of Kathmandu, is the closest you can get to the massive snowcapped mountains from the Kathmandu valley. The Langtang region is dominated by Langtang Lirung [7246m], the highest peak in the area. This is a superb introduction to trekking among some of Nepal’s most beautiful scenery.

Trekking in the Langtang takes you through the forests of the Langtang valley to the alpine meadows and yak pastures around Kyangjin. After an ascent of Kyangjin Ri, from where the 360 degree mountain views are truly spectacular, we retrace our route back down the valley to Syabru Besi and then take a scenic drive back to Kathmandu.

The Langtang trek towards the base of Langtang Himal, north of Kathmandu valley, offers the shortest approach to snowy mountains from Kathmandu. Starting from Syabru Besi after a 6-7 hour drive from Kathmandu, we follow the trail upstream of the Bhote Kosi River through ethnic Tamang villages, lush green forests and the broad Kyangin valley surrounded by snowy peaks from all four sides. After an ascent of Kyangjin Ri , we retrace our route back down the valley to Syabru Besi and then drive back to Kathmandu.

Due to the gradual ascent along the river valley, this Langtang trek is not considered strenuous, but it remains challenging as it reaches an altitude of 3800 m. at Kyangjin and 4350m. at Kyangjin Ri . The Langtang trek can be done any time of the year except during the monsoon season of July and August.
